ABOUT THE SWARTZBERG COLLECTION

Allan L. Swartzberg, was a Santa Fe, New Mexico real estate and financial investor, art collector, philanthropist and civic activist, who died on January 15, 2020 of complications due to pneumonia.
Allan was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, but fell in love with Santa Fe in 1965 while attending St. John’s College and decided to call Santa Fe home for the balance of his life. He quickly immersed himself in the Santa Fe community and gave generously of his time and resources to support local activities and causes over the years. Allan also remained active and supportive of his native Chicago community throughout his life. He had a deep passion for the arts, particularly photography, and curated an impressive and extensive collection over several decades. Allan, and his late wife Mary, who passed away in 2011, were instrumental in helping found the Marion Art Center complex at the College of Santa Fe that later became the Santa Fe University of Art and Design.
Allan’s collection was informed both by a critical and informed eye, but also with an understanding of the impact that financial support could mean to artists. His belief in younger artists spurred their careers; his appreciation of the works of well-known artists resulted in a significant collection that spanned many art forms: painting; photography; works on paper; sculpture and pottery. He was particularly supportive of local artists and artisans, reflecting his love of his adopted home.
